Tourism in Savigliano and surrounding areas, just a step away from the Langhe and Monviso

Savigliano is an ideal tourist destination for those wishing to immerse themselves in Italian history and culture. Come and discover the beauty and charm of this unique city!

Savigliano, located in the Cuneo plain, is a tourist destination rich in history and art. With around 20,000 inhabitants, the city offers valuable artistic testimonies that reflect a fascinating past.

Initially populated by Celtic-Ligurian communities, the area was later conquered by the Romans, leaving an indelible mark in the name "Salvianum," from which Savigliano derives. The city lost its role as a military stronghold with the demolition of the fortified walls in the eighteenth century, but regained prestige with the arrival of the railway in 1853, becoming a centre for important textile and mechanical manufacturing.

In 1880, the first facilities dedicated to the processing of rolling stock evolved into the National Company of Savigliano Workshops (SNOS), a company of European renown. Today, this industrial tradition continues under the guidance of the French multinational ALSTOM.

Savigliano has also given birth to prominent figures such as Santorre di Santa Rosa, hero of the revolutionary movements of 1821, and Giovanni Schiaparelli, one of the most important Italian astronomers.

Fairs and Museums to visit

Savigliano hosts many festivals, including the Agricultural Mechanisation Fair, the largest in North-West Italy. This event features an exhibition space dedicated to both new and used agricultural equipment and machinery, suitable for flatlands, hills, mountains, and gardening. Additionally, companies involved in alternative energy, renewable resources, biogas, and ecological solutions, as well as car dealerships, also participate.

Don't miss the opportunity to participate in the Bread Festival, an event held every two years in Savigliano, a journey through the history of bread that will stimulate both the palate and the mind. The historic centre of the city transforms into a large open-air laboratory, ready to welcome commercial exhibitors, events, workshops, and tastings, all united by the rediscovery of the art of bread-making.

Certainly worth a visit are the Piedmontese Railway Museum and the Civic Museum.

The industrial hub of Savigliano, dedicated to the construction of high-speed trains, boasts a history that dates back to the mid-19th century. The Piedmontese Railway Museum recounts this extraordinary era, celebrating a means of transport that marked an age through a vast collection of railway vehicles saved from demolition.

For over 150 years, the city of Savigliano has maintained a privileged relationship with railway transport, as it was among the first in Piedmont to be served by a railway line from 1855. This impetus led to the establishment of numerous mechanical workshops, which gradually developed into a cutting-edge and highly specialised industrial hub.

The Civic Museum “Antonino Olmo” and the “Davide Calandra” Gipsoteca are located in the ancient seventeenth-century convent of San Francesco, in the heart of the historic centre of Savigliano. Inaugurated in 1970, the museum houses civic collections and valuable art donations, including the Gipsoteca dedicated to the Turin artist Davide Calandra (1856-1915). The museum also offers a notable variety of collections that encompass local history, art, and culture.
